In the middle of a dark room stands a monumental statue of a man split in two. The left half, luminous and intact, speaks of self-acceptance, freedom and love. The right half is overrun by an organic black, cracked, engraved with words, covered with hundreds of sticky notes and chained to the wall.
The engraved words are old wounds, set in the body; the fragile sticky notes are the violence still going on. The black flows onto the floor, crosses the room and climbs the white wall, which becomes a surface of collective memory.
An autobiographical work, Les Traces draws in particular on queer experience and on how gay men are looked at, to become the universal portrait of a person shaped by other people's words. During the performance the artist gradually covers himself with words; visitors can anonymously write a sentence they once heard, a fear or a word of support.
